The Crisis Center provides a safe, less restrictive, and comfortable environment for persons experiencing distress and impairment due to the impact of situational or psychiatric crises.  The crisis center is open 24 hours per day, 7 days per week and houses a team of staff that provide Emergency Services, Mobile Crisis, Community Crisis Stabilization, and 23-Hour Crisis Stabilization services.  In addition, the Crisis Intervention Team Assessment Center (CITAC) is located within the Crisis Center.  The Crisis Center is designed to assess individual’s needs to address their crisis, provide the least restrictive environment for short-term services, and reduce the risk for inpatient hospitalization.  The cornerstone of the DPCS Crisis Center is the acknowledgement that successful intervention is person-centered and supports individualized recovery and self-determination.  Effective interventions include the fortification of the individuals’ capacity for self-nurturing, choice-making and sustained wellness.  The therapeutic models and techniques utilized for intervention essentially facilitate a standard for success for each individual.

MOBILE CRISIS RESPONSE

When you or a loved one experiences a behavioral health crisis, you and your caregivers may not know what to do, or who is available to help.  It is important to help de-escalate a crisis situation and connect individuals to necessary services and support.  Mobile Crisis Services are provided in the home or any setting where a crisis may occur.  The Mobile Crisis Team screens and assesses crisis situations in person and over the phone, intervening wherever the crisis is occurring. They provide an immediate response, and deliver crisis intervention services at locations throughout the city or county. The team provides strategies to individuals to prevent future crises that may arise and coordinates supports for ongoing services.  This service is accessed through Virginia’s 988 call center.  Dail 988 to request assistance. 


COMMUNITY CRISIS STABILIZATION

The Crisis Team offers a community stabilization service for individuals in need of short-term counseling, care coordination, and peer support to address a mental health crisis.  Individuals eligible for this service must be able to remain safe in the community and are not in need of a higher level of service, such as inpatient hospitalization. The goals of community crisis stabilization is to provide services in a more comfortable environment, reduce symptoms causing the crisis, prevent psychiatric hospital admission, and connect Individuals with community support and resources.  The services are provided to those eligible and willing to participate.  To access this service individuals may be seen by contacting the Crisis Center.   


23-HOUR CRISIS STABILIZATION

23-Hour Crisis Stabilization provides assessment and stabilization interventions to individuals actively experiencing an acute mental health crisis for up to a 23-Hours within a community-based outpatient clinic. This service is accessible 24/7 and is indicated for individuals that are in acute crisis and require a safe environment for proper observation and assessment prior to determining whether admission to inpatient hospital setting is necessary. This service is intended to provide thorough assessments of crisis and psychosocial needs and supports throughout the full 23-hours of service to determine the best resources available for the individual to essentially prevent unnecessary hospitalization.  


CRISIS INTERVENTION TEAM (CIT)

The Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) is a community response to helping people with behavioral health needs. CIT programs bring the community together by including law enforcement, behavioral health, and people with lived experience with mental illness.  The team works together to develop solutions for safely re-directing people in a crisis away from the judicial system and toward support resources whenever appropriate.  CIT strives to maintain a strong community collaboration, an accessible system to address behavioral health crisis, and training for law enforcement and other first responders.  CIT training is a 40-hour curriculum designed to be taught by local specialists from the law enforcement, behavioral health and individual/advocate fields. Training addresses common signs and symptoms of mental illnesses and co-occurring disorders; recognizing when signs and symptoms represent a crisis situation; safely de-escalating a crisis; and utilizing community resources to provide assistance.

 


CRISIS INTERVENTION TEAM ASSESSMENT CENTER (CITAC)

The Crisis Intervention Team Assessment Center (CITAC) provides a secure location for individuals experiencing a behavioral health crisis.  It is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, by members of the crisis intervention team and includes a CIT trained officer.  The goal is to safely provide a therapeutic environment for individuals who come into contact with law enforcement and are in a behavioral health crisis.  Individuals are assessed by a clinician, provided support, and referred to appropriate services.  CITAC accepts a transferred by law enforcement officers allowing them to return to patrol out in the community.  CITAC is located at the Crisis Center.
