Alcoholics
Anonymous
"is
a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and
hope with each other, that they may solve their common problem and
help others to recover from alcoholism. The only requirement
for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues
or fees for AA membership; we are self-supporting through our
own contributions. AA is not allied with any sect,
denomination, politics, organization or institution. AA does
not wish to engage in any controversy, neither endorses nor opposes
any causes. Our primary purpose is to stay sober and to help
other alcoholics to achieve sobriety."(from
the basic text "Alcoholics Anonymous")

Narcotics
Anonymous
"NA
is a nonprofit fellowship or society of men and women for whom drugs
has become a major problem. We...meet regularly to help each
other stay clean... We are not interested in what or how much
you used...but only in what you want to do about your problem and
how we can help." (from the "White Booklet")
Membership
is open to all drug addicts, regardless of the particular drug or
combination of drugs used. When adapting AA's First Step, the
word "addiction" was substituted for "alcohol,"
thus removing the drug-specific language and reflecting the
"disease concept" of addiction.
There
are no social, religious, economic, racial, ethnic, national,
gender, or class-status membership restrictions. There are no
dues or fees for membership; while most members regularly contribute
small sums to help cover the expenses of meetings, such
contributions are not mandatory.
Narcotics
Anonymous provides a recovery process and support network
inextricably linked together. One of the keys to NA's success
is the therapeutic value of addicts working with other
addicts. Members share their successes and challenges in
overcoming active addiction and living drug-free, productive lives
through the application of the principles contained within the
Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions of NA.

Al-Anon
and Alateen
"is
a fellowship of relatives and friends of alcoholics who share their
experience, strength and hope in order to solve their common
problems. We believe alcoholism is a family illness and that
changed attitudes can aid recovery. Al-Anon is not allied with
any sect, denomination, political entity, organization, or
institution; does not engage in any controversy; neither endorses
nor opposes any cause. Al-Anon is self-supporting through its
own voluntary contributions. Al-Anon has but one purpose: to
help families of alcoholics, and by giving understanding and
encouragement to the alcoholic." (Al-Anon Preamble to the
Twelve Steps from the official Al-Anon website.)
You will see from the official Al-Anon website, that for over 50
years Al-Anon (which includes Alateen for younger members) has been
offering hope and help to families and friends of alcoholics.
It is estimated that each alcoholic affects the lives of at least
four other people...alcoholism is a true family disease. No
matter what the relationship you have with an alcoholic, whether
they are still drinking or not, all who have been affected by
someone else's drinking can find solutions that lead to serenity in
the Al-Anon/Alateen fellowships.
