Welcome to the Mental Retardation Services Division

The Mental Retardation Services Division provides a services system that assists citizens of Danville and Pittsylvania County with mental retardation in having the same opportunities and choices as other members of the community in the following areas:

  • to have a home

  • to learn skills which are useful to their lives and careers

  • to work

  • to develop and sustain relationships with people who depend on them and upon whom they can depend

Case Management Services

Case Management assists individuals with mental retardation and their families in accessing services, supports, and resources within their community.  Case Management functions as the door through which an individual passes to access needed services.

Case Management is licensed by the Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse Services.

Case Management Services include:

  • Determination of eligibility for Mental Retardation Waiver Services

  • Assistance in transitioning from state facility-based services to local community-based services

  • Identifying and reaching out to potential consumers

  • Assessing needs and planning services

  • Linking and assisting individuals in obtaining needed services, supports, and resources

  • Coordinating services with other providers

  • Enhancing community integration

  • Monitoring service delivery

  • Advocating for people in response to their changing needs

Mental Retardation Case Managers determine eligibility for Waiver Services.  In order to be eligible, an individual must have a diagnosis of mental retardation and must meet functional and financial eligibility.  For additional information, please call 434.799.0456.

Case Managers also assist individuals residing in Intermediate Care Facilities for the Mentally Retarded; Central Virginia Training Center and Southside Virginia Training Center; and the state mental health facility that serves Danville and Pittsylvania County, Southern Virginia Mental Health Institute; in transitioning from state facility-based services to local community-based services.

Infant Services implements Part C of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).  These services, which are often called Early Intervention Services, include:

 

Service Coordination

Each family is assigned a Service Coordinator who ensures that services provided to their child and his/her family best meet their needs.  Service coordination is provided at no cost to the family.

 

Developmental Evaluations

Each child will receive a full team evaluation to assess his or her developmental levels in five areas of skill:  cognitive, communication, social or emotional, physical, and adaptive.  Initial evaluations will be provided at no cost to the family.

 

Specialized Services

Part C infants and families will receive the appropriate services to help promote developmental progress.  Based on the infant’s and family’s needs, the following services may be provided by local agencies:

  • Special Instruction Home Visit

  • Physical Therapy

  • Speech Therapy

  • Occupational Therapy

  • Family Counseling and Support

  • Audiology Services

  • Vision Services

  • Assistive Technology

  • Health

  • Social Services

  • Nursing Services

Early Intervention provides a full range of services for babies with developmental delays or disabilities, and their families.  The goal of services is to provide formal and informal support to meet outcomes identified by families for their children.  Our specific goal is to assist parents in meeting the unique developmental needs of each child.  We provide outreach, coordinate services, and make referrals in the community as needed.

 

Eligibility

The Infant and Toddler Connection of Danville-Pittsylvania coordinates early childhood services for children with developmental delays or disabilities from birth through 35 months of age, and their families, in Danville and Pittsylvania County.

 

To Make A Referral

Early Intervention Services can be accessed by calling 434.799.0456.  Referrals are made directly to the Director of Infant Services.  Frequently, these referrals are made by parents or pediatricians.  Anyone, however, can make a referral with a parent’s consent.  For referral information outside of the services area, contact the Referral Line at 800.234.1448 or visit the website at www.infantva.org.

 

Family Support Program

The Family Support Program offers limited financial and other assistance for families to provide care for a person with a diagnosis of mental retardation who is living in the home.  The goal of Family Support is to provide services and/or technical supports identified by a family as necessary to maintain their eligible family member in the home.  The Family Support Program offers families the opportunity to make informed and personal decisions regarding supports needed to provide care at home.

 

Family Support is an approach to strengthening and empowering families and communities so they can foster the optimal development of children, youth, and adult family members.  The program serves families who have someone living at home who has mental retardation or a developmental disability.  Family Support is a combination of financial assistance, services, and technical supports.

 

The staff person, consumer, and caregiver will complete an application form together to request Family Support funds.

 

Summer Respite Services

Summer Respite Services allow children and youth time together during the summer for social and recreational activities.

 

The staff provides transportation to and from home and community activities.  Participants enjoy a wide range of activities including swimming, movies, bowling, horseback riding, exercise, and cultural events.

 

Participants also enjoy the opportunity to interact and have fun with their peers.

 

Our goal is to expose children and youth to a variety of leisure and recreational activities and, at the same time, teach life skills.

 

Intensive Residential Services

Individuals live in a home-like setting with 24 hour a day staff support and training.  Emphasis is placed on supporting each person to develop his or her personal lifestyle so he or she can become as independent as possible.

 

Individuals receive services that enable them to improve or maintain the skills necessary to live in the community.  Our goal is to provide high quality, community-based services so the individuals we serve can enjoy their life to the fullest.

 

Individuals receive training and assistance with:

  • Personal care (bathing dressing, eating, and grooming)

  • Communication

  • Mobility

  • Housekeeping and laundry

  • Shopping

  • Food preparation

  • Medication administration and physician visits

  • Appropriate adult behavior

  • Community activities (bowling, concerts, restaurants, etc.)

  • Transportation to all events and appointments

Individuals receive assistance and support in their own homes, which enables them to continue living in the community.  Services can be provided for an individual who lives alone or with family members. 

 

Emphasis is placed on individual needs and empowering the person to meet the challenges of living in the community.

 

Individuals receive training and assistance with:

  • Learning to solve problems

  • Appropriate peer interaction

  • Cooking, cleaning, and shopping

  • Money management

  • Community inclusion

Individuals age 13 and older come to a central location to learn, have fun, and enjoy the company of others.  Services are provided both at the Day Services Center and in the community.

 

The Day Services Center is equipped with a full kitchen for cooking activities, a music room with keyboards and guitars, an arts and crafts room, an exercise room, and a computer lab.

 

Community activities include movies, recycling, shopping, swimming, museums, the library, volunteering, and enjoying a cup of coffee at a local coffee shop.

 

The Day Services Program provides opportunities for peer interaction, social integration, and community involvement.

 

Individuals can participate for two to seven hours a day, based on their personal preferences.  Emphasis is placed on enabling individuals to improve or maintain their maximum skill level.

 

Individuals receive training and assistance with:

  • Gross and fine motor skills

  • Communication

  • Personal care

  • Community safety

  • Appropriate peer interaction

  • Sensory stimulation

  • Social and environmental awareness
